Mana Whenua
Belonging

By photographing tamariki in their learning environment, we strengthen their sense of connection to their place and their peers. It says, 'I belong here, and this place is part of my story.'

Children who feel like they belong have improved sense of wellbeing and gives them the confidence to try new experiences.

Mana Atua
Wellbeing

When children see themselves celebrated in photos, it boosts their emotional wellbeing and self-worth.

It celebrates their safety, their joy, and their confidence in their surroundings -  a reminder that they are seen, valued, and an important part of the Centre's special community, and their family.

A gift for your Centre

To further emphasise mana whenua, community and mana atua associated with creating portraits, every host Centre will receive an A1 poster of the beautifully illustrated Whippersnappers tree and a passport size photo of each child to stick onto it's branches.

FAQs

What is Whippersnappers exactly?

We're on a mission to make ECE portraits a fun, rewarding experience for whanau, tamariki and kaiako alike.

We've taken what we've learned through our sister brand Pop-in Photos, and we're turning our camera magicians towards capturing under 5s in their element, while optimizing processes with automation and bespoke technology to make photo day a joy.

How is shoot day organised?

To join a growing crowd of thrilled Whippersnappers partner Centres, simply flick us an email and we'll set up a date for your first annual session!

Your on-the-day crew includes two wonderful and skilled photographers who can capture both studio style portraits and 'at-play' candids in double quick time.

Tell me about the tech and systems

Our bespoke web-app allows whanau to log in before Photo Day and set their permissions, they'll be reminded about the shoot so that no one misses the memo.

Within 48 hours the photos are loaded up and ready to view within the password protected whanau accounts. Caregivers can easily select and order their portraits online using our intuitive gallery tools.

We own the tech which means we can keep a tight rein on privacy, and frankly would raise an eyebrow at any photographer who doesn't.

Who are the photographers?

Our team of photo wizards are experts at getting giggles out of even the toughest candidates. We pick the good eggs, then ensure they're professionally trained and extremely experienced. Background checks and safety training are thrown in for good measure so you can be completely confident about who you're inviting to visit your community.

How does the Permission Dashboard work?

We believe parents and caregivers should hold the keys. Before photo day, they receive a secure invitation to create a Whippersnappers account with access to a Permission Dashboard. Here, parents can grant or withhold consent for participation individual portraits, first friends photos, and the Group shot.

If they don’t give the green light via the dashboard, no photos are taken. It puts full control firmly in whanau hands and saves a tonne of admin on the day.

What about our Centre's routine?

We pride ourselves on blending in.
Need a nap? No worries.
Kai time? Dig in!

We work around each child's daily rhythm so that everyone is perky and ready to play when it's their turn in the hot seat.

Our unique Group shot montages allow for portraits to be captured throughout the morning, or across multiple visits for larger centres. Absent kids can be scheduled into a nearby catch up event so no one misses out.

We have babies and older children? Will it work?

We are experts in under 5s, from newborn and beyond. Our special supportive Whippersnappers chair allows safe posing for all ages.

Our team are specially trained in baby handling and toddler charming tactics. We work hard to connect with all ages and temperaments to ensure beautiful portraits for all.

How is health and safety managed?

Safety is our absolute priority. We have strict safety protocols and take extra steps to ensure kids are protected, especially around our staff and studio equipment.

We always have to hand our Health and Safety hazard register, and are more than happy to discuss additional concerns you may have.

What about the kids not present for shoot day?

Our goal is to capture every member of your centre community, so no one is left out. We encourage those who don't typically attend on your scheduled Photo Day to come along with their parent during the first hour or two of the shoot. For those who are ill or absent on the day, we can coordinate a catch up session at another nearby centre, or in our local studio (selected locations).

Some of our kids are more reserved, or still transitioning, how do you handle them?

Full disclosure, the 'tricky' ones are kind of our favourite. There's nothing more rewarding than capturing a bright, relaxed portrait of someone who is typically weary, those sparkly spicy brains, or those who starts out in NO-mode.

Our photographers are irresistably fun, we know how to talk toddler and we perform photo miracles on the regular. Sometimes it means beefing up the silly juice, and sometimes it means getting quiet and secretly snapping from behind the slide. We do what it takes!

If we really can't win them over, we welcome a catch up session at another centre if the parent prefers.

Are teacher's photographed too?

Absolutely! Your role in each child's life can not be understated and we think its vital to include kaiako in group photos - for the memories. You also have access to digital copies of these portraits so you can use them for professional displays.

We loved you! Can you come back for Christmas?

We like to offer additional sessions to our favourite centres - perhaps you'd value a Grandparent's Day photo booth? A fun Christmas party? A Family Fundraiser session? We would love to help.

Got another burning question that you'd like to discuss?
